VISITING FAMILY & FRIENDS AT TEGH

Please review the following information to help ensure the safety and well-being of patients while visiting a loved one in the hospital.

  • Visiting hours are from 12:00 Noon to 8:00 pm seven days per week.
  • Please do not come to visit patients if you are sick or not feeling well.  Visitors should NOT visit if they have any of the following symptoms:  cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea.
  • Visitors should wash their hands both before and after visiting the hospital.  This is a very effective way of helping to stop the spread of infectious diseases.  If hand washing is not possible, the use of alcohol hand rinse and rubbing hands together until dry is recommended.
  • A significant other (one person) is welcome to stay with a patient during non-visiting hours for the purpose of emotional support and care of a loved one.
  • Two visitors per patient are welcome during visiting hours (significant other is included in the two persons if they are present during general visiting hours).
  • Children under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
  • Please be aware that some areas of our hospital are allergen free (nuts and perfume) and, for the safety of our staff, we ask that you look for and follow the signage posted in these areas.
  • If you are visiting a person who is under isolation precautions, please follow the signage on the door regarding the equipment you will need to use to keep yourself and others safe during and after the visit.
  • Please ask a Nurse for assistance if you do not understand the instructions posted on the door.

Exceptions to the Visiting Guidelines:
Visiting hours may be extended for compassionate reasons.  The nurse providing care and the physician responsible will determine if compassionate grounds apply (palliative care, critically ill etc).  The following table will outline departmental exceptions.

Ambulatory Clinics
Patients may have one significant other attend clinic with them.

Complex Continuing Care
Due to the nature of the service and the fact that this is a home to the residents, no visiting restrictions will be applied under normal conditions.

Day Surgery
Visiting hours will be 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Emergency Department:
Due to concerns related to infection control, the ‘significant other’ identified by the patient is the only person permitted to be with the patient.  This individual is to remain by the bedside unless otherwise directed by the health care team.  For paediatric patients, the significant other will be considered both parents if appropriate.  Significant others may alternate if required.

Intensive Care Units
It is essential that all visitors check in with the nursing station in order that patient status is addressed prior to visitation.

Maternal/Newborn
The patient and the health care providers will negotiate birth attendants.
Children must always be in the presence of a designated, responsible adult.  This adult should not be the birthing woman.
The infant’s parents must accompany visitors to the Special Care Nursery.   Only siblings of the infant may visit the Special Care Nursery.

Mental Health
Due to therapeutic patient programs offered during day hours, visiting will be welcomed from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday to Friday.   On weekends and statutory holidays the visiting hours will be 1200 Noon to 8:00 pm.

Post Anaesthetic Recovery Room (PARR)
One parent may stay in PARR with a child for the duration of the child's recovery.  Otherwise, visiting of post-op patients is at the discretion of the nursing staff.  A hospital Volunteer accompanies the parent/visitor into the PARR as necessary.

Definitions – Types of Visitors:

  • Clergy/community faith leaders, labour coaches, doulas or other community professionals are not considered to be visitors but rather a part of the health care team.  Their contact with the patients should be arranged directly with the patient and their health care team.
  • Significant Other: A person who has important meaning to the patient and who will remain with the patient to provide support.  There may be more than one “significant other” identified by the patient but only one person may accompany the patient at any given time beyond “visiting hours”.   In the case of paediatric patients, both parents will be considered “significant others” and will be allowed access together.
  • Visitors:  Those individuals identified by the patient who constitute their network of support and care. Visitors shall remain with the patient at all times unless otherwise directed by patient or members of the health care team.
