THE MEDICAL TRIAGE UNIT

In 1997 a group of specialists and Emergency Department nurses collaborated to create the Medical Triage Clinic.  The goal of the unit was to free up emergency beds by offering rapid access to specialist care for semi-urgent referrals from the Emergency Department. Today, the department provides care to more than 5,000 patients annually. It has become an essential part of the rapid access and response departments in Toronto East General Hospital.

The Medical Triage unit does not specialize in any particular field of medicine; they address the medical needs of any semi-urgent patient.  The physicians are medical internists, some with subspecialties in Infectious Disease, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology.  Some examples of typical patients are those with cellulites, headache, multiple medical complaints, diabetes, chest pain, hypertension, DVTs and generalized weakness.  The Clinic is staffed with well versed and highly experienced Emergency nurses who allow the clinic to function in a rapid and responsive manner.

As well as addressing semi-urgent patient needs, the Medical Triage Clinic operates clinics set up to service complex patient populations within the South East Toronto community.  Physicians may refer their patients to the clinic instead of using the Emergency Department as a pathway to extensive assessments.

HIV Clinic

The HIVClinic offers HIV positive patients treatment, follow-up, counseling and coordination of community care.  The Clinic is fortunate to have a pharmacist specializing in HIV medication.  With over 100 patients, the clinic is the only one of its kind in the area.

Hepatitis C Clinic

The Medical Triage Clinic also provides nursing care and teaching designed for patients that are Hepatitis C positive and in need of Interferon treatment.  For more information please contact (416) 469-6580 x6252.
