BIOETHICS SERVICE

What is Bioethics?
Bioethics involves helping patients, families and health care professionals facing difficult moral or value-based choices in health care settings to decide the best course of action. The goal is not to impose values on others, but to assist individuals and groups in solving complex ethical problems so they may make informed decisions about treatment.

How can the Bioethicist help me?
The Bioethicist is a resource person, with advanced training in ethics, who can help clarify ethical issues, offer other perspectives, review options, make recommendations, and assist with decision-making.

What will the Bioethicist do?

  • Provide confidential consultations
  • Ensure all relevant facts, values and options are explored
  • Help people understand and explore available treatment options and the likely outcomes of each
  • Identify and provide information to help people make decisions about ethical issues
  • Mediate to assist groups or individuals when there is a difference of opinion or values about a particular patient care situation
  • Participate in TEGH's Research Ethics Board (Research and Education) to address ethical issues in research
  • Research ethical issues in patient care
  • Provide education to patients, families and professionals on ethical issues in patient care
