SURGERY

Welcome to the Surgery Health Service which consists of 9 interdisciplinary teams of health care professionals who provide a continuum of care for the surgical patient from pre-admission to discharge in all specialties. These specialties include, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Urology and Dentistry. Our team is experienced and capable of meeting your needs. We collaborate with you and your doctor to plan and deliver the care you need. The following is brief description of each area in Surgery Health Service and the names of the primary contact persons.

Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (PAC)

The Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic expedites patients’ preparation for surgery by coordinating all the elements required to ensure that patients are well informed and medically prepared for surgery. They also offer patients the opportunity to conduct their PAC visit over the telephone. The surgeon decides which choice is better for the patient and the surgery they are having. PAC is located on the second floor, F-wing. It is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 am  - 5:00 pm. Their telephone number is (416) 469-6035.

The Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (PAC) is set up to prepare all TEGH surgical patients for their planned surgery.  Some patients will be seen in the clinic and some will be assessed in a telephone interview.

Day Surgery Unit

The Day Surgery Unit continues the process initiated in PAC by confirming the information gathered and intervening where necessary to keep both patients and surgeons informed of changes since the PAC visit. The Day Surgery Nurses prepare patients for their surgical experience. They also care for patients undergoing special procedures and/or day medicine patients. The Day Surgery Unit is located on the sixth floor G-wing. Their telephone number is (416) 469-6580 x6564.

Operating Room

Once patients are prepared for surgery, they are escorted to the Operating Room where their surgical procedure is performed. The Operating Room is state-of-the-art with windows in each of the operating suites. The Operating Room includes a waiting area for patients’ and their family and/or friends to wait in together up until their time for surgery. There is another waiting area, where family and/or friends will be kept informed by a hospital volunteer as to when the patient arrives in the Recovery Room after their surgery. The Operating Room is located on the sixth floor J-wing.

Post Anaesthetic Recovery Room (PARR)

Following surgery, patients receive care in the Post Anaesthetic Recovery Room. The nurses here will ensure patients are provided with comfort and support as they wake up from their anaesthetic. Once they have recovered from the anaesthetic, patients return to the Day Surgery Unit if they have had a day surgery procedure, or to an in-patient unit if their procedure requires a longer stay in the hospital, or to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit if they require intensive medical or nursing care. The Recovery Room is located on the sixth floor J-wing.

In-Patient Units (A5, B5)

There are two In-patient Surgery Units. The staff on A5 are specialists in providing support for patients recovering from Orthopaedic Surgery or injuries and specialize in Otolaryngology and Thoracic Surgery.  The staff on B5 specialize in General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology and Plastic Surgery.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The ICU provides intensive medical and nursing care on a continuous basis for patients after surgery and with severe medical diagnoses. The ICU staff are committed to providing expert and compassionate care. As this is a critical care unit, we ask that families/friends contact ICU via the phone in the waiting room or at the electronic door prior to all visits. Families are welcome to call 24 hours a day. ICU has flexible visiting hours.

Ambulatory Surgical Services

Ambulatory Surgical Services provide timely access to physician specialists and to programs targeted at prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care. Our goal is to increase healthcare efficiency by providing contemporary health programming and services that address the changing health care needs of the South East Toronto community and beyond.

Support Services

Central Processing Department (CPD)

The Central Processing Department supports the hospital, including the patient care areas of Surgery Health Service by cleaning, sterilizing and compiling all the instruments and supplies required for any surgery or special procedure. They are located in the G-wing basement.

The Surgery Health Service is committed to ensuring that you have the full range of services (e.g. Pre-Operative Autologous Donation) to address the possible need for blood and blood products resulting from your surgery. The coordinator anticipates your needs and educates you about the choices so that you can make informed decisions in your care.

Wound Ostomy Specialist

The Wound Ostomy Specialist is a clinical resource available to both staff and patients who promotes the management of complex wounds, and new ostomies. Our patient consultation is limited to those patients that have had their ostomy surgery at Toronto East General Hospital.

Patient Care Coordinators, Supervisors & Nursing Practice Leaders
Surgery staff are supported daily by Patient Care Coordinators, Supervisors with the additional support of Nursing Practice Leaders who promotes ongoing professional growth and development.
