At Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) we are committed to improving care for patients and quality of work life for staff, physicians and volunteers. We believe that a commitment to research is a commitment to advancing human welfare, knowledge and understanding.
As a community hospital affiliated with the Joint Centre for Bioethics and the University of Toronto, patients, physicians and staff contribute to research through their participation in clinical trials, retrospective data analyses, case studies, interviews and surveys.
The Research Ethics Board (REB) oversees all research involving human subjects conducted under the auspices of TEGH to ensure that research meets the highest scientific and ethical standards.
Overarching Principles of Ethical Review
Ethics are principles of right conduct guiding "what ought to be done". In the context of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Guidelines on Research Involving Human Subjects, the Committee subscribes to the following ethical principles that are commonly held and valued by diverse research disciplines:
- Respect for human dignity
- Respect for free and informed consent
- Respect for vulnerable persons
- Respect for privacy and confidentiality
- Respect for justice and inclusiveness
- Balancing harms and benefits
The role of the Research Ethics Board is the protection of human subjects volunteering to participate in research.
