CAMPAIGN GIVING

TODAY...
Toronto East General Hospital is at a turning point

To maintain its essential role in the face of a booming population and technological advancements, TEGH must embark the most significant capital redevelopment campaign in its history. By investing $200 million, TEGH will expand, modernize and upgrade the Hospital site through the addition of a new multi-storey building and dramatic renovations and expansions of our current facility.

In support of this ambitious undertaking, the TEGH Foundation is launching a capital Campaign to raise $55 million in private support. The followings are our funding priorities:

EMERGENCY

Increasing efficiency and accessibility for the Stavro Critical Care Centre
Goal:
$1.5 million

To ensure that every patient has access to top quality emergency care in a timely manner, TEGH will undertake a comprehensive redevelopment of the Emergency Department in order to efficiently manage growing demand and maintain levels of emergency care. This project will provide an additional 10,000 square feet to streamline the entire emergency treatment process and increase the Department’s capacity by adding an additional 17 patient spaces for a total of 55, and doubling the number of clinical decision/treatment rooms from six to 12.

ONCOLOGY

Enhancing compassionate, patient-focused cancer care
Goal:
$1.5 million

To address the critical need for a more comfortable and spacious environment for our growing number of cancer patients and their families, TEGH is moving forward with plans to relocate the Haematology/Oncology Clinic to an expanded, more accessible and patient-friendly area in the Hospital’s K-wing. The new Clinic will result in more than twice as much space and the improved treatment facilities will allow TEGH to combine the best of medical expertise with its renowned compassionate and supportive oncology care.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY

Guiding the future of surgery
Goal:
$4 million

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a key initiative undertaken by the Hospital to enhance TEGH's service to its community. Using advanced MIS equipment and techniques, our surgeons can perform complex operations using multiple small incisions rather than one large incision, resulting in less post-operative pain, less time spent in hospital and quicker recovery times. Emphasizing Minimally Invasive Surgery reflects the Hospital's current strength in the field and acknowledges that innovative methods of surgery will allow TEGH to be both responsive and flexible to meet the emerging needs of an ever-evolving health care system.

This project is the recipient of a Challenge Grant from Dr. William Waters. To inspire donors, all contributions to this compelling project will be generously matched dollar-for-dollar, allowing donors to be recognized at double their gift level.

PACS
ANY PICTURE. ANY WHERE. ANY TIME.

Transforming to a fully-digital medical imaging environment
Goal:
$2.4 million

Implementing a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) to manage, store and distribute digital medical images will enable TEGH to offer its patients more complete diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. As a computer-based network, PACS will make patient information available for review by medical professionals throughout the Hospital simultaneously, thereby allowing expert consultation, detailed analysis of examinations, and ensuring optimal patient care. It is a critical component in TEGH's transformation from hard-copy patient medical images and health records to an on-line digital environment.

CARDIOLOGY

Establishing The Stonehouse Cardiac Diagnostic Centre
Goal:
$0.6 million

The new Stonehouse Cardiac Diagnostic Centre will create a more patient-focused environment that will offer increased privacy and establish a dynamic centre of cardiac testing and care for both patients and medical staff.

In addition, TEGH will be implementing a new digital echocardiography system that will provide quicker access to high quality digital images. These advances will lead to better clinical and patient care outcomes. The implementation of digital echocardiography is essential to all phases of cardiac care at TEGH including diagnosis, staging, treatment and ongoing follow-up.

RESEARCH & EDUCATION

Leaders in community-based collaborative research and education
Goal
:
$1 million

As part of the Campaign, Toronto East General Hospital has designated Education and Research as key strategic priorities. We are on the cusp of vital new directions – in education and poised to be a Canadian leader in Community Based Participatory Research. These initiatives reflect our Hospital’s increasing affiliation with the University of Toronto and academic medical and other community health organizations.

TEGH has long considered medical education to be one of its core missions and has one of the highest teaching intensities of any Ontario community hospital.

Our Hospital is also no stranger to the exciting field of research, we have a renowned history of leadership in orthopaedic surgical techniques and in-vitro fertilization. Now, TEGH is leading a shift in focus from conventional, hospital-based research to an exciting field of Community Based Participatory Research.

As a Hospital that delivers a full range of services to a diverse urban community, TEGH is positioned to occupy a unique niche. In partnership with teaching and research activities with the University of Toronto, TEGH is committed to becoming a Canadian leader in community-based clinical research and education in Ontario.

"There is a dramatic growth in the demand for health education opportunities in multidisciplinary environments. Community hospitals like TEGH offer students a broad spectrum of experience with a diverse population of patients and a wide range of medical techniques, pathologies and procedures, providing medical and allied-health students with vital training in family and community medicine.”

UROLOGY

Community leaders in robotic prostate surgery
Goal:
$4 million

One of the most exciting developments in Minimally Invasive Surgery is the revolutionary robotic prostate surgery system, the da Vinci System. This remarkable technology allows surgeons to operate in an entirely new way and reduces patient trauma, pain, recovery time, and length of stay in the hospital. TEGH’s commitment to acquiring a da Vinci surgical robotic system for the Department of Urology, is an investment that will reap exceptionally meaningful rewards.

The Division of Urology is committed to providing a multidisciplinary urology and oncology service where robot-assisted surgery is the primary surgical approach, offering the best care to battle prostate cancer.

TEGH’s Urology Division will focus on a robust teaching environment by partnering with the University of Toronto where the robot is the foundation for growing research and advancement in the science of prostate surgery and education. This robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer program will provide TEGH with the platform for a definitive strength in Men’s Health.

"The future of medicine lies in the hands of those who can master the art of minimally invasive surgery. We have a responsibility to properly train the next generation of physicians. Our goal is to craft an experience for urology residents, that provides unparalleled exposure to the most modern surgical options available today.”

NEW PATIENT CARE CENTRE

Building a welcoming, patient-friendly environment
Goal:
$40 million

The most significant component of TEGH’s redevelopment is a Patient Care Centre comprised of two new multi-storey buildings that will accommodate 280 new medical and surgical inpatient beds, and consolidate ambulatory care (outpatient) services into one convenient, easily accessible patient-friendly location.

Modern inpatient rooms built with the infrastructure and functionalities required for the care and monitoring of complex medical problems will lead to better outcomes: lower infection rates, increased patient comfort and privacy, shorter stays, fewer transfers, and much less stress for patients and their families.

The new ambulatory care area will feature a comprehensive range of outpatient programs and services in spacious clinics and waiting rooms that incorporate natural light and innovative decor, resulting in a supportive health care environment.

Going beyond bricks and mortar, the Patient Care Centre will be environmentally conscious and sustainably designed and built to meet today’s needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their needs.

“The Campaign will make a world of difference to patients, families, students and staff. TEGH has been delivering outstanding care in considerably less than perfect conditions. With this redevelopment, we will be able to raise the bar even higher.”

William MacKinnon, Co-Chair of TEGH's Capital Campaign
